Tips to Unclog Your Sink
Tips & Advice
A clogged sink is undoubtedly one of the most common and frustrating problems you can face in your home or business space. Whether it’s the kitchen sink backed up with grease and food remnants, or the bathroom sink choked with hair and soap scum, it completely disrupts your daily routine.
Before you panic, there are a few simple and highly effective DIY solutions you can try to get the water flowing again:
1. The Classic Solution: Boiling Water
If your kitchen sink is blocked by built-up grease, boiling water can work wonders. Boil a kettle full of water and pour it slowly and directly down the drain. Let the hot water melt away the fat and repeat if necessary. (Note: Avoid this method if you have PVC plastic pipes, as boiling water can soften or damage them).
2. The Eco-Friendly Duo: Baking Soda and White Vinegar
This natural combination is safe for your pipes and incredibly effective. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed immediately by half a cup of white vinegar. A fizzing reaction will occur, which helps break down the grime. Plug the drain, wait for about 15-20 minutes, and then flush it out with plenty of hot water.
3. The Trusty Plunger
A standard sink plunger is an important tool for any household. Fill the sink with just enough water to cover the base of the plunger, place it over the drain hole, and plunge vigorously up and down. The pressure created is often enough to dislodge the blockage.
4. Clean the P-Trap
If the clog is stubborn, place a bucket under the U-shaped pipe (P-trap) beneath your sink. Unscrew the slip nuts by hand or with a wrench, empty the trapped water and debris into the bucket, clean the pipe out, and securely reattach it.
